Job Description: Development Director
Term of Employment: Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Location: Remote
Who We Are:
The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The Animal Legal Defense Fund accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to hold animal abusers accountable, supporting tough animal protection laws and fighting legislation harmful to animals, and providing resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the expanding field of animal law.
Role Description:
The Development Director will supervise a team of remote development professionals working collaboratively to meet ALDF’s fundraising goals. These include developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet the organization’s annual budget of $17.5 million, and working to increase revenue over time through major gifts, foundation and corporate grants, planned giving, and direct marketing. The Development Director will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure that the organization’s fundraising goals and strategies further ALDF’s core mission and values.
How You Will Make a Difference:
Development Operations
· Collaborate with the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer to develop and execute a strategic plan to meet organizational fundraising goals.
· Cultivate cross departmental collaboration to support ALDF’s strategic fundraising plan.
· Serve as a strategy partner for the Senior Executive Team.
· Ensure ALDF’s fundraising efforts align with the highest standard of fundraising ethics and guiding principles.
· Provide leadership that supports and inspires the Development team by thoughtfully and strategically managing direct reports’ resources, priorities, and time.
· Maintain an interest in and connection with technology or strategies to enhance and support the team and fundraising objectives.
· Maintain an in-depth understanding of ALDF’s work to communicate our impact to potential funders
Major & Planned Giving
· Facilitate the implementation of major and planned giving strategy by:
- leading efforts to identify and cultivate major and legacy donor giving candidates
- creating stewardship plans; and
- creating strategies for solicitation.
· Collaborate across departments to support donor stewardship and fundraising initiatives through events, campaigns, and communications materials.
Foundation & Corporate Giving
· Facilitate the foundation and corporate giving strategy implementation by leading efforts to research, identify, and solicit mission-aligned funding opportunities.
· Collaborate across departments to facilitate planning, writing, designing, and evaluating grant-funded opportunities.
Direct Marketing & Online Giving
· Facilitate the direct marketing strategy by generating effective efforts to create, package, and schedule online and direct mail fundraising efforts and donor acquisition activities.
· Manage relationships with direct marketing vendors.
· Collaborate across departments to develop and execute effective donor communications and marketing materials.
We Are Looking for Candidates With:
- 7+ years of development experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of success in major gifts, foundation and corporate giving, and special events. Direct marketing experience preferred.
- Experience creating and implementing a strategic plan and budget.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write compelling donor communications and marketing materials.
- Strong leadership and management skills, with experience managing a team of fundraising professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, Board members, and organizational partners.
- Experience with fundraising software and donor databases.
- A strong understanding of, experience with, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
- An understanding and demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
- The ability to exercise good judgment.
- Commitment to working with integrity.
- The ability to travel periodically for staff meetings and retreats (estimated 1-3 trips annually).
We Offer Competitive Compensation with Excellent Benefits, Including:
· A starting annual salary of $158,398 for most geographic locations.
- For candidates located within 25 miles of Washington D.C., Cotati, CA, and Los Angeles, the starting pay is $166,735.
- For candidates located within 25 miles of New York City and San Francisco, the starting pay is $175,072.
- To ensure salary equity, we do not negotiate salary outside of the published starting rates. Rates are determined by role, using set geographical factors.

· Generous paid time-off provisions:
