Data Director at Greener by Default
By Hannah Kinder @ 2025-07-15T20:12 (+1)
At Greener by Default, you will be working towards the ambitious goal of completely transforming institutional foodservice - and the food system as a whole - by making plant-based food the default.
We recognize that the fate of humans, animals, and ecosystems are bound together, and strive to create a food system that will allow all life on earth to flourish. To achieve our vision, we develop strategies rooted in science, sustainability, and inclusivity to empower institutions to serve plant-forward food.
Position Objective:
As our Director of Data, you’ll create and implement our data strategy as we scale to work with dozens of foodservice institutions. Your expertise will ensure that data continues to be an asset to our team and our clients, and helps to facilitate our growth. You’ll also play a key role in measuring our impact, turning raw foodservice data into clear, compelling evidence of positive change.
Responsibilities and Projects:
- Develop data strategy. Create and implement the Data Team’s OKRs and KPIs to assess role responsibilities and measure the progress.
- Develop a deep understanding of the data available to our clients through exploration and dialogue with our project managers and clients. Harness this understanding to ensure we get the necessary data from clients to allow us to demonstrate the impact of our pilots.
- Clean and analyze client datasets independently using in-house Python pipelines. Handle client analysis from start to finish, calculating impact metrics and adapting and modifying existing code to meet each client’s unique needs. Organize and securely store client data.
- Communicate insights effectively by translating complex analyses into concise summaries to support project managers in presenting to clients.
- Enhance our codebase by identifying opportunities to improve automation and robustness, committing your code to Github and collaborating with code reviews.
Individual Attributes Required:
- Detail-oriented: Strong attention to detail & data quality.
- A proactive, problem-solving mindset: In addition to running code; understanding it and finding ways to improve it.
- A curiosity about data: When you see something abnormal in a dataset, you seek out the root cause, whether it's incorrect data, broken code or simply your own misunderstanding and work to improve upon it.
Position Requirements:
- Proficiency in Python: at least 3 years of experience, including fluency with version control, pandas, and matplotlib. Demonstrated experience with best practices such as modular code, testing, linting and docstrings.
- Experience cleaning and wrangling messy, real-world datasets.
- Fluency with using Generative AI and at least one of the following LLM-based coding tools: Cursor, Windsurf, Github Copilot or Claude Code (other, similar tools are acceptable with explanation).
- Strong organizational and project management skills: ability to work on multiple client analyses simultaneously while respecting all client data-privacy agreements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills: ability to explain quantitative findings clearly and concisely.
We prefer candidates who have experience with the following:
- Developing a data strategy for an organization scaling to dozens of clients
- Large language model python APIs (ChatGPT, Google Gemini)
- Cloud infrastructure for managing data (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Databricks)
- Working with/in foodservice settings
We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate during the application process and after you join the team.
