Animal Equality Continues to Take Part in Working Groups Shaping Mexico’s First National Animal Protection Law

In April, we joined two forums—one in the Senate and one in the Chamber of Deputies—urging lawmakers to ensure the law protects all animals, as mandated by the 2024 constitutional reforms. Support our campaign here.

Empowering Students Through Plant-Based Education

Love Veg continues offering free plant-based cooking workshops. This month, we reached Dietetics and Culinary students from three universities, highlighting the health, environmental, and animal protection benefits of choosing plant-based.

Reintroducing the Animal Abuse Bill in Chiapas, Mexico

In May 2023, we introduced a bill to criminalize animal abuse in Chiapas, Mexico. However, it was stalled during the electoral period. We have drafted a new version, are working closely with local lawmakers, and are preparing to reintroduce it soon.

Partnering with the UN Global Compact to Advance Plant-Based

For the second year, Love Veg and Alianza Alimentaria are partnering with the UN Global Compact to design a mostly plant-based menu for their annual event in June in Mexico City. We aim to show over 500 attendees how prioritizing plant-based food supports the Sustainable Development Goals.

Half of Spain’s Cage-Free Commitments from Food Producers Are Being Met

Of the 56 food producers in Spain that publicly committed to stop sourcing eggs from caged hens, 65% have reported progress, and 48% have fully met their commitment. Read more in our Q1 2025 report.

Pushing for Food System Reforms in Spain and the EU

Animal Equality is urging Spain’s Government to support a plant-based food system to end animal suffering, improve health, and protect the environment. We’re also working to strengthen animal welfare standards in government food purchasing policies, both at the national and EU levels.

Advancing Ban on Force-Feeding in Spain

Animal Equality supported the introduction of a proposal in the Spanish Congress to ban the force-feeding of ducks and geese for foie gras production in Spain.

Complaint Against Foie Gras Industry for Misleading Advertising

Animal Equality has filed a complaint against INTERPALM (the association of foie gras producers) for misleading consumers by failing to disclose that foie gras production involves the force-feeding of animals.

We Celebrate a Parliamentary Question on the Killing of Male Chicks

Sumar, a Spanish political group, has submitted a parliamentary question, urging the Government to clarify its stance on male chick killing in the egg industry and to consider legal reforms to ban this cruel practice.

Animal Equality Releases U.S. Pig Farm Investigation Tied to Major Grocery Chains

A new investigation by Animal Equality, filmed in winter 2024–2025, reveals cruel conditions at a Kansas pig breeding facility tied to Ahold Delhaize—the multinational behind U.S. grocery chains like Food Lion, Stop & Shop, and Giant. Despite pledging in 2014 to eliminate cages for pigs and hens from its U.S. supply chain, Ahold Delhaize has failed to act. Animal Equality is demanding immediate action to end this cruelty.

48 Hours of Protest in Ahold Delhaize’s Home Country

Animal Equality’s global team and supporters took action in Zaandam, Netherlands, during Ahold Delhaize’s annual shareholder meeting. Inside, executives were questioned over the company’s ties to animal cruelty. Outside, demonstrators presented an “animal abuse award” for its continued use of gestation crates. The following day, protests continued at the company’s headquarters and a nearby store owned by one of its major brands. We made it unmistakably clear to the company through protests, posters, chants, a mobile video display, and an airplane towing a large banner: Ahold Delhaize must end the use of cages in its US supply chain!

Comparative Analysis Reveals Scottish Salmon Industry Avoided Millions in Fines Due to Scotland’s Lax Penalty System

Via Scottish newspaper, the Herald, Animal Equality compared sanctions for wrongdoing within salmon aquaculture in Scotland compared to other countries. Despite over 700,000 fish reportedly escaping from Scottish salmon farms between 2014 and 2024 - increasing the risk of spreading DNA, parasitic lice, and deadly diseases to wild animals - no fines were issued; whereas, in Chile, 690,000 fish escaped and the industry received £4.3 million in penalties. An FOI also revealed that a non-compliance was reported every six days to regulatory body SEPA between 1st April 2023 and end of January 2025, yet no financial fines were issued. This timely release comes when the Scottish Government’s Rural Affairs and Islands Committee has questioned the ‘long-term viability’ of the salmon industry and given the Government 12 months to clean up its act.

Scientists warn that millions of pigs suffer agonising deaths in the UK every year

In a study commissioned by Animal Equality, experts expressed concern over the stunning of pigs using CO2 gas at slaughter. In the academic peer-reviewed article published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science journal, co-authors Jenny Mace and Veterinary Professor Andrew Knight of the University of Winchester claim that stunning pigs during slaughter using high concentrations of CO2 gas causes pain, fear, and respiratory distress in the animals’ final moments of life. The journal is in the top quartile for veterinary science journals. Nearly one million pigs are killed in the UK for human consumption each month. Nine in ten pigs in England and Wales are reportedly stunned and killed using this controversial method, which has been condemned by the AWC for over two decades. Despite alarm among the scientific community, the use of CO2 remains legally permissible.

Steroids found in Scottish salmon headed to France

Animal Equality and Scottish Salmon Watch revealed that Scottish salmon due to be imported by France was contaminated with steroids, which are illegal to use on fish farms in Scotland.

Locals push back against UK’s first fully onshore aquatic farm, speaking of their love for the land and animals on it

In the Mirror, Animal Equality told the story of John Nelson who, for fifty years, has been documenting the wild animals on a local patch of land in his little red book - land due to be used for the UK’s first fully onshore fish farm. John spoke of the thousands of bright butterflies that fluttered past in his garden on their way to the scrubland, the Stone Age artifacts he has discovered over the years, the deer and the rare birds, and his fears that a fish factory will be built here - an entirely new form of factory farming. He tells a story of such magic, wonder, and love for animals, adding to the notion that RAS farms are untested and unwanted. 



Animal Equality - Italy

Promoting a 100% Plant-Based Easter

In April, we promoted a 100% plant-based Easter through engaging content on our social media channels and direct email campaigns. We shared delicious vegan recipes, tips for a compassionate celebration, and inspiring messages to encourage our community to choose plant-based options during the holiday.


Public Figures Support Our Call for Justice for Male Chicks in Italy

Well-known figures from the worlds of entertainment and culture, including science communicator Mario Tozzi, journalist Giulia Innocenzi, comedy duo Le Coliche, actress Rosita Celentano, TV personality Sabrina Salerno, director and illustrator Bruno Bozzetto, and TV host Edoardo Stoppa, have publicly supported our manifesto, standing up for justice for male chicks.


Animal Equality - Germany

Our campaign for progressive animal protection in Germany continues!

In the coalition agreement, the federal government has outlined its roadmap for the legislative period and specified which political measures are to be implemented in the coming four years. Although the planned measures show initial approaches to more "animal welfare", many urgent problems in the area of animal protection are only superficially addressed or not mentioned at all. We demand genuine animal protection in Germany and our campaign ‘Tierschutz ist nicht verhandelbar’ (‘Animal welfare is non-negotiable’) continues; we will persistently work throughout the legislative period to eliminate deficiencies and legal loopholes.

Animal Equality - Brazil 

Animal Equality exposes contradiction in the Bourbon Hotels sustainability practices

Animal Equality Brazil protested against Bourbon Hotels at Turistech Summit 2025, a Summit that gathered 30 corporation leaders to discuss sustainability practices in the truistic and hotel sectors. The aim of the protest was to question why Bourbon Hotels hasn’t released a cage free policy, especially while the company claims to be an example of sustainable practices in the hotel sector.  During the speech of the Borboun’s ESG leader, an Animal Equality spokesperson questioned when the cage-free policy would be released. 

The action was featured in local media and released on Animal Equality’s Instagram. 

Animal Equality Brazil held a public hearing to discuss mandatory labor to inform customers about the cruel practices of the farmed animal industry. The event aimed to secure pledge support for the approval of the bill filed at the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (ALESP), at Animal Equality’s request. Animal customer rights specialists joined too, to debate the outcomes of the potential approval, and it was featured on TV Alesp and on Alesp digital news.


Animal Equality - India

Investigation exposing cruel and illegal practices inside goat meat industry

A groundbreaking investigation by Animal Equality exposed widespread cruelty and blatant illegalities in the goat meat industry across Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar. We documented conditions in seven farms, five markets, and four slaughter facilities, revealing the appalling suffering inflicted on goats at every stage of their lives. The investigation was covered by the Outlook and Dainik Bhaskar. Animal Equality also presented a list of recommendations to the Government to protect animals from these abuses and urged the Government to introduce rules for the welfare of goats.
