Salary: $105,000 - $115,000, depending on experience.

The Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) is the first and only trade association in the U.S. representing the nation’s leading plant-based foods companies. PBFA’s mission is to champion, strengthen, and elevate our members and the plant-based foods industry. Our sister organization, Plant Based Foods Institute (PBFI) works to create a plant-based food system that benefits people, the planet, and animals.
By serving members’ interests through the Plant Based Foods Association, and by identifying and disseminating impactful solutions through the Plant Based Foods Institute, we empower the plant-based foods industry to drive food system transformation. The two organizations convene and collaborate with our membership, partners, and stakeholder groups to increase the availability and accessibility of plant-based foods, and promote a transition in agricultural practices.
Summary
The Financial Controller is responsible for all accounting and finance functions for PBFA and PBFI, serving both as primary accountant and strategic partner to the Leadership Team regarding organizational finances. This position reports to the Senior Director, Operations.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting operations including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledgers, revenue recognition, restricted grant spend, employee expense reports, etc. via our accounting software, Quickbooks.
- Develop and monitor internal controls.
- Prepare financial statements and reports to guide decision-making.
- Coordinate budget development and forecasting.
- Coordinate annual audit process with external firm, serving as primary contact and leading information gathering.
- Coordinate 990s preparation and filing in partnership with external firm.
- Collaborate on payroll with our PEO and Senior Director, Operations.
- Develop and implement SOPs and best practices, and partner with Senior Director, Operations to refine internal finance policies.
- Partner with the CEO and Senior Director, Operations to develop PBFA/I’s financial strategy.
- Analyze organizational financial data to advise leadership.
- Evaluate areas of risk and collaborate on plans for mitigation.
- Answer questions from colleagues, clients, customers, or stakeholders regarding financial information or issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate is:
- A clear, direct, and respectful communicator both verbally and in writing
- An excellent teammate with sophisticated collaboration skills, as well as able to use good judgment to take initiative and work well independently when appropriate
- Analytical, with an eye for evaluation and adaptation
- Excellent at balancing prioritization and pacing
- Able to manage details and also zoom out to see the bigger picture
- Vision-aligned with PBFA/I in the areas of equity and inclusion
Experience and skills:
- Minimum 5 years of accounting experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, or related field
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting systems
- Knowledge of nonprofit and/or association accounting and reporting requirements
- Demonstrated success in analyzing organization’s finances in partnership with leadership to support sustainability, growth, and diversification of revenue streams
- Successful experience working in a fully remote environment (preferred)
