Location: Remote in Mexico (Mexico City preferred)
Position Objective:
Helping Mercy For Animals' legal efforts in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, advocating for farmed animals, and ensuring the organization's legal compliance in all aspects of the operation.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide legal support to the investigation department, conducting necessary research on all relevant laws and regulations and addressing any legal issues during investigations.
- Assisting in the organization's demands to take appropriate legal action related to investigations, including reviewing investigative material and offering support to authorities.
- Review the organization's campaign materials from a legal standpoint.
- Support the Organizing Department with demonstrations, events, and relationships with volunteers, providing legal advice related to such activities.
- Proactively research, develop, and implement legal initiatives, including notifications, lawsuits, and complaints to government agencies.
- Write and review contracts and any other legal documents.
- Support the LatAm General Counsel with government compliance and labor issues.
- Take care of any legal and juridical issues during the organization's day-to-day operations, including providing legal and juridical research, advice, and other legal assistance as requested by team members.
- Develop and deliver training for staff on legal and corporate issues.
- Provide legal support in the organization's relations with the press and in external contributions
- Create and maintain close working relationships with lawyers and other animal protection organizations.
- Manage MFA's relationship with outside counsel in all Spanish-speaking Latin American countries in which MFA carries out activities.
- Follow all Mercy For Animals policies and procedures.
- Perform other activities designated by the supervisor.
Position Requirements:
- Diploma in Law
- Regular professional license
- Senior-level experience practicing law
- In-depth knowledge of animal rights and MFA campaigns
- Proven ability to create and deliver presentations, address and resolve issues, and negotiate with third parties
- Very desirable: ability to conduct press conferences and interviews
- Desirable: legal experience or knowledge in other Spanish-speaking Latin American countries
- Exceptional organizational and writing skills
- Ability to work well as a team
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Willingness to travel
- Verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English
