Dear FAST Network Members,
We’re excited to share a significant milestone in our mission to improve aquatic welfare and sustainability in Africa! 🌊🐟
Ethical Seafood Research is now collaborating with over 14% of the aquaculture sector in Egypt which is the world’s third largest tilapia farming country. This collaboration is particularly focused on improving the welfare of Nile tilapia, and we estimate having positively impacted the lives of over 260 million fish. This achievement marks an important step towards advancing welfare standards within the industry.
Our progress has been made possible thanks to the support of our partners, including FAI, a group dedicated to fostering innovation in animal production systems. Whereas they provide the technological framework, we at ESR have taken charge of the on-the-ground implementation in Egypt, in collaboration with Aquavet Egypt and Kafr El Sheikh University, and elsewhere in Africa but on a smaller scale.
We’re proud of the impact we’ve achieved so far, but we recognise that there’s still work to be done. It’s crucial that the welfare assessments farmers are conducting continue to lead to tangible changes in farming practices, ensuring real improvements in the conditions the fish are raised in. As we continue to focus on aquatic animal welfare in Africa, we aim to elevate this consideration as a key priority in the region's aquaculture sector.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to keeping you updated on our continued progress!
Warmly,
Amada Perales Ferrer (she/her)
