Demo calling on supermarket conglomerate to follow through on its cage-free pledges
Our team and volunteers carried out a peaceful demonstration in London to urge Ahold Delhaize - a supermarket conglomerate known for its US chains: Giant, Stop & Shop, Hannaford, and Food Lion - to act on its commitments to remove gestation crates for pigs and cages for hens from its supply chain. Our efforts continue!

Animal Equality - Italy
The company eliminated cages on its own farm in 2013 and in contract farming by 2014. Beginning in January 2025, all fresh eggs sold to Italian consumers under its brands will come from free-range, barn, or organic systems. Furthermore, by 2030, the company committed to establish private agreements with suppliers that exclusively operate cage-free farms. Cascina Italia's detailed policy has been achieved through persistent dialogue since 2020. The success reflects the team's perseverance, expertise, and strategic corporate outreach work.
More than 100 activist in Milan for the International Animal Rights day
On 10th December 2024, coinciding with the International Animal Rights Day, Animal Equality activists gathered in Milan's Castello Sforzesco square to honor animals exploited in the food industry. The event featured displays of instruments used in factory farming, such as castration and tail-docking pliers, to raise public awareness about the cruelty these animals endure. Additionally, Ombretta Alessandrini, Animal Equality Italy's Campaigns Manager, emphasized the day's significance during a live interview on Sky TG24, a famous Italian all-news television channel. Animal Equality participates of the AVA Summit-Veg Fest
From 5th-8th December Animal Equality Brazil participated in the AVA Summit, held in São Paulo, along with the Veg Fest. Our Vice-President for Latin America, Dulce Ramirez, and the Executive Director for Brazil, Carla Lettieri, gave inspiring presentations and Katya Ramirez participated in a cooking session. In Animal Equality's booth, participants could try out our 3D investigative experience with iAnimal, sign our campaigns, or download our free Love Veg ebooks packed full of delicious Brazilian recipes. The photos can be seen here.
Animal Equality organizes Protest in the International Animal Rights
On 8th December, Animal Equality Brasil organized a protest at the main avenue in São Paulo for International Animal Rights Day. The event gathered 150 activists, volunteers and representatives of other animal protection organizations. During the protest, volunteers showed the instruments used in the farmed animal industry to cause pain and mutilation on animals and the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was read. The photos of the event can be found here.
Animal Equality releases a second investigation on Self Control Law
In December Animal Equality Brazil released a new investigation about the Self Control Law, approved in 2022. After intense mobilization of civil society organizations led by Animal Equality, the Brazilian Senate approved Law 14.515/2022 that withdraws the governmental mandatory inspection from slaughterhouses and allows companies to inspect themselves. In June 2024, we went to slaughterhouses in the state of São Paulo, where a law similar to the federal law entered into force in 2021. The footage shows serious infractions to the Federal norm of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) 365/2021, demonstrating that the absence of inspectors may inflict even greater suffering to animals during slaughter and cause serious risks for the public health.
Animal Equality - India
Animal Equality exposes cruel and illegal practices in the pork industry
Our latest investigation revealed pigs being beaten, stuffed in bags during transport, and bludgeoned with a hammer and stabbed in the heart several times during slaughter. The investigation was conducted into pig farms, markets and pig slaughterhouses in Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Animal Equality investigates the 2024 Gadhimai animal sacrifice
Animal Equality has campaigned tirelessly to put a stop to the animal sacrifice at the Gadhimai festival since 2014. Exclusive footage filmed by Animal Equality at the festival shows the massacre of thousands of buffaloes and goats. With consistent efforts, the number of animals sacrificed have reduced; this year we counted approximately 1,500 buffaloes whereas the count was 3,203 in 2019.
Animal Equality also distributed leaflets among devotees who had brought animals for sacrifice and explained that the original tradition had nothing to do with animal sacrifice. We hung awareness banners and, in an effort to discourage animal sacrifice and in keeping with the original tradition, we organised a blood donation in collaboration with the Red Cross.
Love Veg India
As a part of our Love Veg campaign, we proudly presented to 271 students in Pune on why and how to enjoy more plant-based food.
Cage-free eggs transition
Animal Equality has been persuading egg producers to adopt a cage-free housing system for hens. In December we persuaded three egg producers to go cage-free, impacting 4,500 hens each year.
Animal Equality - US
Animal Equality releases Uncounted ‘chicken mortality’ report
Released in collaboration with VOX, Animal Equality’s Uncounted report reveals a staggering number of chickens who die before ever making it to the slaughterhouse. The report explains how, each year, over 500 million chickens die on farms without a reported cause–succumbing before slaughter from disease, organ failure, and neglect.
Campaign launches against Ahold Delhaize–the company behind major U.S. grocery brands
Ahold Delhaize—the global company behind Food Lion, Giant Food, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop—is under fire for failing animals. Despite publicly claiming to support animal welfare, the company has delayed its goals and failed to report meaningful progress on its existing promises. Animal Equality is demanding Ahold Delhaize deliver clear plans to end cages for hens and pregnant pigs.

Protest At The Opening Of Aldi South's ‘exemplary’ Store
We were in Duisburg for the opening of the ALDI Süd ‘exemplary’ store, as it was called in the media. With our animal defenders, posters and flyers, we highlighted the cruel cage farming in the US supply chain and ALDI Süd's double standards on animal welfare. We handed out hundreds of shopping bags to customers with our demand 'Stop animal cruelty in the USA, ALDI Süd!' The Customers showed interest in our action, took the literature and contributed to our protest by bringing our campaign demand printed on the shopping bags inside the store.
Through the winter with Love Veg
Our Love Veg Advent calendar, which we distributed at VeggieWorld in Germany in November, brought delicious plant-based food into homes. From 1st-24th December, we shared a delicious recipe from our international team with the people every day.
Protest At Career Fair In Mülheim An Der Ruhr
At the end of November we protested in Mülheim an der Ruhr, the city where ALDI Süd has its headquarters in Germany, to highlight the suffering of pigs and chickens in ALDI Süd's US supply chain. The discounter attended a career fair at the university to recruit new employees. We handed out notepads about our campaign with the words 'Stop animal cruelty in the USA, ALDI Süd' printed on them. Together with our Animal Defenders, bikes with posters and flyers, we once again highlighted ALDI Süds double standards when it comes to animal welfare and the cruelty of cage farming.

Activists demand justice on Animal Rights Day in Spain
Animal rights activists gathered on International Animal Rights Day to protest factory farming conditions and demand government action. Actress Elisabeth Larena read a manifesto at the event, which Animal Equality has organized annually since 2008.
Demanding the Spanish Government to consider animal protection in new farm regulations
We participated in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food's public consultation on modifying farm management regulations. We are advocating for an end to painful pig mutilations, the killing of male chicks in the egg industry, and the force-feeding of ducks and geese for foie gras production.
Animal Equality shows for the first time the use of a guiding sheep in slaughterhouses
Some slaughterhouses use a guiding sheep (called “Judas” by the industry) to lead the small lambs to the slaughter line. In Spain, lamb slaughter surges 43% in December to meet holiday demand. This exposé, featured in media like El Diario, urges people to choose plant-based options for compassionate holiday celebrations.

Protest to demand restaurants say no to eggs from caged hens
As part of our #NoMoreCages campaign, we held protests outside Toks and Maison Kayser restaurants in Mexico City. During these events, we exposed that both companies have failed to progress on their promise to stop using eggs from caged hens.
Love Veg inspires people to bring peace to their tables this holiday season
Animal slaughter rises by up to 20% during the holiday season. To counter this, Love Veg in Mexico launched its annual festive campaign. Four recipe books feature plant-based versions of traditional holiday dishes, encouraging people to choose compassionate alternatives for their celebrations.
