Victory for Project 1882: Sweden’s mink farms are shutting down

The fight against fur farming in Sweden has taken a major step forward.

After years of advocacy work by Project 1882, the Swedish government announced a voluntary decommissioning aid for mink farmers, allocating 180 million SEK. Now, after a long wait, that aid is finally in place. To be eligible for it, the remaining mink farms must be phased out before the summer.

Public pressure against fur farming remains strong in Sweden, and Project 1882 has played a key role in this victory. Project 1882 was, for example, a driving force in the EU initiative Fur Free Europe, which gathered over 1.5 million signatures.

There are many indications that the farms are already empty. However, while this marks the end of an unethical industry, a legal ban on fur farming is still needed to ensure it never returns. Project 1882 is urging the Swedish government to follow through with a full ban and make fur farming a thing of the past. These dedicated efforts will continue in 2025 to secure this ban in Sweden and push for a broader EU-wide prohibition.
